The Numbers Station (2013) Synopsis :

Emerson (John Cusack) is a wet-work specialist. After an assassination, he tracks down a witness and kills him. The witness' daughter sees this, and Emerson is unable to kill her. His partner Michael Gray (Liam Cunningham) kills the girl instead. Emerson loses his will to do assassinations, and Grey re-assigns him to protect a code announcer, Katherine (Malin Akerman) at a Numbers Station. Numbers Stations are secret facilities that broadcast codes to agents in the field.

Emerson reluctantly begins his protection task, which is boring. During a routine transit to the Station, Emerson and Katherine are ambushed. Emerson kills the would-be killers and reports in. Central control tells Emerson that the broadcaster Katherine is compromised and orders him to "retire" her. During the 4 hours they have to wait for reinforcements, he is unable to kill her, and takes care of her instead. They hear drilling from the outside - attackers are still trying to get in.

Now he is given a break and a seemingly uncomplicated assignment of simply protecting the security of a young female code announcer, code resources and remote station they are assigned to. Danish director Kasper Barfoed has only two other movies to his nameand this is his first English speaking one. It's also by far thelargest (production wise) he's worked on with John Cusack and MalinAkerman in the leading roles. Apparently Ethan Hawke was replaced by MrCusack at the last minute which made a lot of sense to me because thisis precisely the type of role Ethan Hawke thrives on and is definitelynot John Cusack's usual choice. Malin Akerman might not be classed asone of the greats but she is a hard working actor who can put out somegreat performances when required. In this movie her acting skills don'tget a chance to be put to full use but she's still more than just apretty face in this Brit financed Indie. This film also has more than apassing resemblance to 'Safe House' with Denzel Washington except forthe star power and budget of course. An interesting fact about thefilming location, the old Rendlesham US Army Base in Suffolk, Englandhad one of the most famous Alien/UFO encounters, 1980, ever recorded(allegedly, lol).

Of the two main actors John Cusack is the more bankable but Ms Akermanis far more pleasing to the eyes (certainly my eyes anyway) andtogether there is an on screen chemistry that works well and helps sellthe situation we find the duo getting themselves in. John playsEmerson, a hit-man who had a shaky last assignment so has been shippedto England to the slow paced task of keeping Katherine (Akerman) safeand well so she can do her job. Her job is to send out codedinstructions to hit-person which activates a hit (wetwork) on someunlucky person. The base is compromised so Emerson and Katherine musttry to stay alive and reverse whatever the invaders have done.

This isn't the fastest paced thriller I've seen but it's nice andsteady with little down time so keeps you keenly waiting for the nextbit of excitement. A nice little single location thriller.

well, guys who gave low scores for this movie better getting off theirhigh horses and at least having some solid feelings where they stood.this movie actually is quite watchable and i wouldn't mind telling youthat i'm one of the arrogant, cynical, and hair-splitting picky guyswho never had patience to any and all kinda bad movies, yet this onesurprisingly surpassed my expectation. john cusack looked quite old inthis film, his hairs looked quite stiff and unnatural due to so muchhair dye was used that had made his hairs looked so disgusting. hisfacial features also looked quite messy.....but he did a great job hereand malin akeman also performed so well. the screenplay was wellcrafted and the "panic room" replaced by some military bunker was alsonot bad at all. this film looked quite low budget but never gave you aB movie feeling and it's quite smart to have limited money well spentand turned a film into a quite watchable suspenseful one. if you by anychance want to watch a film without being foolish and make your moneyworthwhile, then watch this one, at least it won't let you down toomuch.

7.6 of 10. Fast moving film that says a lot about intelligenceoperations and the mental state of the operatives, why they do whatthey do, and the risks/prices they pay.

In these, it's easy to get hung up in details of is it real or is thisdone exactly like that, or is the cryptography accurately handled. Forthe most part, this successfully portrays the details. Are thereactually numbers stations? That's not the question to ask. Are theresecret communications operations? Yes. Once you get past that, mostpeople already know and accept there are secret killings, so you cansimply enjoy the story (except for the product placement, of course).

Another problem with these films is they get too caught up in themessage, talking, and forget about action, thrills, and the story. Thisdoes a surprisingly good job quickly setting up the plot and keepingthe pace fast (best of all, without any car chase scenes or similargimmicks). The soundtrack/score helps too.

Something like a simplified, but not dumbed down, Bourne Identity film.
